What Is a Ripple Mattress?

Also called an alternating pressure mattress or air mattress for bedsore care

A ripple mattress uses groups of air cells that inflate and deflate alternately to redistribute pressure. The cell design, pump cycle and settings depend on the model. Some products are overlays placed on a compatible base mattress; others replace the mattress. The name “ripple mattress” alone does not establish how a unit should be installed.

Ask the care team which support surface suits the person’s mobility, skin condition and ability to reposition. A diagnosis alone does not identify the right mattress.

How It Helps — and What It Cannot Do

The alternating cycle redistributes pressure, which supports the skin-care routine for a bedbound patient. It does not replace that routine: scheduled repositioning, skin checks, hygiene and nutrition still matter, and a mattress is not a guarantee against pressure injuries. • The pump runs on mains electricity — place the bed where a socket is reachable.
• Confirm the exact model, cell type and weight guidance on the written quotation.
• If a bedsore already exists, tell us and your care team — suitability depends on the wound’s stage.

Overlay or Replacement Mattress?

Our RM199 ripple mattress is an overlay. It sits on top of a base mattress and does not replace it, so the bed needs a mattress underneath: our RM399 PVC waterproof mattress or a suitable mattress you already have. Do not lay it straight on the bed platform. A replacement air mattress, which takes the place of the base mattress, is a different product.

• Base and size: check whether a base mattress is required, the inflated length, width and height, and the permitted bed platform.
• Pump and power: confirm the supplied pump, tubing, power requirement and manufacturer instructions for alarms or loss of power.
• Person and rails: ask a competent provider to check the intended user, weight limit, gaps and remaining rail height with the mattress installed, including when the bed is adjusted.

Ripple Mattress Price and How Ordering Works

The mattress is always its own line item — nothing is added silently

Our advertised ripple-mattress purchase price is RM199, confirmed by the owner on 25 July 2026. It is an accessory purchase, separate from hospital bed rental (from RM150/month, RM0 deposit) or a bed purchase (from RM799). The quotation must identify the mattress model, whether a pump is supplied, warranty, delivery and the total for your postcode. Ripple Mattress or Foam Mattress?

Two different ways of managing pressure, chosen by risk, not by price

The Pump: Electricity, Noise and Power Cuts

Electricity. In alternating mode the pump runs all day and night, unlike a bed motor that only draws power while moving. Work out the monthly cost from the label on the pump: (watts ÷ 1,000) × 24 hours × 30 days × the rate per kWh on your TNB, SESB or SESCO bill.

Noise. Hang or place the pump as the manual shows, usually at the foot of the bed rather than by the head. Keep it off the wall and never cover its air vents with a blanket. A constant hiss or a new loud sound is not normal: check the hose connections and contact the supplier.

Power cuts. Without power the pump stops moving air. Some models have a transport mode or valves that hold air for a while; others deflate slowly. Ask in writing how long the mattress stays inflated without power and what to do if the power fails at night.

First-Day Setup Checks

1. Place the base mattress on the bed first, then lay the ripple overlay on top of it. Do not put the overlay directly on the bed platform.
2. Connect the hoses without kinks and let the cells fill completely, for the time the manual gives, before the person lies down.
3. Raise and lower the head and knee sections once and check that no hose is pinched or pulled.
4. Re-check the side-rail height against the inflated surface.
5. Route the cable away from walkways and avoid stacking adapters on one socket.
6. Keep the manual, the pump model number and the supplier’s phone number within reach.
