What Is a Ripple Mattress?

Also called an alternating pressure mattress or air mattress for bedsore care

A ripple mattress is an air mattress made up of lateral air cells connected to a small electric pump. The pump inflates and deflates alternating cells in cycles, so the pressure on any one part of the patient’s skin keeps shifting instead of pressing on the same spot for hours. It lies on top of the hospital bed’s platform and is used for patients who spend most of the day in bed.

Families usually add one when a doctor, nurse or physiotherapist flags bedsore (pressure injury) risk — for example after a stroke, in late-stage illness, or for elderly patients who cannot reposition themselves.

How It Helps — and What It Cannot Do

The alternating cycle redistributes pressure, which supports the skin-care routine for a bedbound patient. It does not replace that routine: scheduled repositioning, skin checks, hygiene and nutrition still matter, and a mattress is not a guarantee against pressure injuries. For wound staging or treatment, follow a health professional’s advice.
