The three types of hospital bed mattress
| Type | What it is good for | Things to know | Our price |
|---|---|---|---|
| PVC waterproof mattress | Everyday use where spills or incontinence are likely; wipes clean. | Static surface. Pressure relief depends on its construction and on repositioning. | RM399 |
| Ripple (alternating-pressure air) | Used where the care team advises an alternating-pressure surface. | Needs a pump on mains power, makes a low hum, and changes rail height once inflated. Confirm on the quote whether the supplied model is an overlay or a full replacement. | RM199 |
| High-specification foam | Named by NICE CG179 for adults at high risk of pressure ulcers. | Silent, no power. Ask your care team or hospital where to obtain one. | Not a listed product |
How to choose
- Start with the risk. Ask the nurse or doctor how high the person's pressure-injury risk is. That decides between a static and a dynamic surface more than price does.
- Think about cleaning. If incontinence or feeding spills are likely, a waterproof cover makes daily care easier.
- Check the fit. Measure the bed platform's length and width. A mattress that is too small leaves gaps at the sides and ends.
- Check the rails. A thicker mattress or an inflated air mattress lowers the effective rail height. MHRA guidance explains how to check gaps and rail height.
- Check that it bends. The mattress should follow the back and knee sections of the bed without bunching.
Can you combine a ripple and a foam mattress?
Some ripple products are overlays designed to sit on top of a base mattress; others replace the mattress. Follow the manual for the exact model, and never place an overlay straight on the bed platform unless the manufacturer allows it. The pump, setup and troubleshooting are covered on our ripple mattress page.
Cleaning and checks
- Follow the product label for cleaning agents; waterproof does not mean every seam can be soaked.
- Check regularly for tears, open seams, flattened foam, leaking air cells and kinked hoses.
- For a rented bed, ask who is responsible for cleaning and replacement under the written terms.
Getting the bed and mattress together
Hospital beds rent from RM150 a month with an RM0 deposit, including one-month rentals, or can be bought from RM799. Payment is collected after the bed is delivered and set up. Add the mattress as its own line on the quotation so it is delivered with the bed. See hospital bed rental, buy a hospital bed, or bedsore care at home for the wider prevention plan.
Hospital bed mattress questions
Does a hospital bed come with a mattress?
Not automatically. Our advertised bed prices are for the bed only; a mattress is supplied only when the written quotation lists it as its own item.
How much is a hospital bed mattress in Malaysia?
Our PVC waterproof mattress is RM399 and our ripple (alternating-pressure air) mattress is RM199. Confirm the model, size and delivery for your bed on a written quotation.
Can I use a normal mattress on a hospital bed?
A household mattress often does not fit the platform, may not bend with the back and knee sections, and can change the gap to the side rails. Measure the platform and check rail height with the mattress in place before using one.
Which hospital bed mattress is best for a bedridden patient?
There is no single best mattress for everyone. The surface should match the person's pressure-injury risk, weight and continence needs, so ask the care team. A waterproof cover helps with cleaning; an alternating-pressure air mattress is used where a dynamic surface is advised.
