The bed, the mattress and the routine
The bed frame
Lets the carer raise the backrest and knees, work at a comfortable height and turn the person without dragging them across the sheet.
The mattress surface
Does the pressure work. Foam spreads body weight over a larger area; an alternating-pressure surface keeps moving the load from one area of skin to another.
The care routine
Repositioning, skin checks, dry skin, food and fluids. NICE CG179 asks for the turning frequency to be written down for each person.
A frame on its own relieves no pressure, and a mattress on its own does not turn anyone. Plan the bed and the mattress together and match them to the person’s risk.
What the bed frame needs for pressure care
- A knee section as well as a backrest. When only the backrest goes up, the body slides towards the foot of the bed and the skin over the tailbone is dragged with it. This drag (shear) adds to the damage that pressure causes. Raise the knees a little first, then the backrest. All four of our beds have both sections.
- Height adjustment, if one carer does the turning. Turning someone several times a day and night means bending over the mattress every time. A bed that rises lets the carer work closer to waist height and roll the person rather than pull them. Our Flexi 3 Function goes from 40 cm to 65 cm; the Standard 2 Function is fixed at 50 cm.
- Side rails checked with the mattress in place. An air overlay raises the sleeping surface, so the rail stands lower above it. MHRA guidance asks for the rail height and gaps to be checked with the actual mattress fitted. If the rail is too low above the inflated overlay, ask about extra-height rails before the person uses the bed.
- Room on both sides. Turning is safer when the carer can reach from either side. Leave a gap along both long sides of the bed if you can, and keep the pump cable out of the walkway.
Which of our beds to use
| Model | Backrest and knee | Height | Rent / month | Buy | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard 2 Function Manual (M15) | Crank | Fixed, 50 cm | RM150 | RM799 | A short recovery, or a person who can help with their own turning. |
| Flexi 3 Function Manual (M08) | Crank | 40–65 cm, crank | RM250 | RM1,349 | One carer turning someone several times a day, without needing a motor. |
| 3 Function Auto (M10) | Motor | Motor | RM450 | RM2,799 | A carer who adjusts the bed many times a day, or a person who can change position with the hand control. |
| Ultra 6 Function Electric with Hi-Lo (M40) | Motor | Motor, plus head and foot tilt | Not rented | RM5,500 | A tilt position named by the care team. |
Prices are for the named bed only. Mattresses, accessories, delivery and setup are included only when the written quotation lists them. More on the motorised models is in electric hospital beds, and sizes are on hospital bed dimensions.
Which mattress surface
| Surface | How it works | From us |
|---|---|---|
| High-specification foam mattress | Spreads body weight over a larger area. No pump, no power. | Not a listed product |
| Alternating-pressure (ripple) overlay | Air cells inflate and deflate in turn, so the load keeps moving between areas of skin. Sits on top of a base mattress, and the person lies on the overlay. | RM199 |
| Base mattress | Sits on the bed platform and carries the overlay. It is not sold as a pressure-relief surface. | PVC waterproof, RM399 |
What NICE CG179 says about surfaces for adults:
- Use a high-specification foam mattress for adults assessed as being at high risk of a pressure ulcer in primary and community care (1.1.13).
- For adults who already have a pressure ulcer, use high-specification foam; if that does not redistribute pressure enough, consider a dynamic support surface such as an alternating-pressure mattress (1.4.9).
- Do not use standard-specification foam mattresses for adults with a pressure ulcer (1.4.10).
The guideline describes types of surface; it does not name or assess any brand or product, including ours.
The overlay itself, including its pump, power use and first-day checks, is covered on the ripple mattress page. All mattress types are compared in hospital bed mattress.
Setups and what they cost
In these examples the bed is rented and the two mattress items are bought as separate accessories. With no deposit, the first month looks like this:
| Setup | First month | Each month after |
|---|---|---|
| Rent Standard 2 Function + PVC base mattress + ripple overlay | RM748 | RM150 |
| Rent Flexi 3 Function + PVC base mattress + ripple overlay | RM848 | RM250 |
| Rent Flexi 3 Function + your own base mattress + ripple overlay | RM449 | RM250 |
| Rent 3 Function Auto + PVC base mattress + ripple overlay | RM1,048 | RM450 |
| Buy Flexi 3 Function + PVC base mattress + ripple overlay | RM1,947 once | Nothing |
The quotation names the overlay model and whether a pump is supplied. These totals leave out delivery and end-of-rental collection. One-way delivery within Malaysia costs up to RM280; the actual charge depends on the address and access and is set on the written quotation. Payment is collected after the bed is delivered and set up. If you use your own base mattress, it has to fit the bed’s sleeping surface: 200 × 90 cm on the Standard, 210 × 95 cm on the Flexi.
Across 642 completed rentals with explicit hospital-bed evidence between 1 March 2025 and 26 April 2026, the median rental lasted 31 days (rental duration data). If you are not sure how long the bed will be needed, a one-month rental with no deposit lets you start without buying. A new bed carries a 365-day warranty under the scope written on the quotation, invoice or warranty record.
Setting it up on the first day
- Place the bed where the carer can reach both sides, near a socket for the pump.
- Put the base mattress on the platform, then the overlay on top. The overlay never goes straight onto the platform.
- Let the cells fill completely before the person lies down, then check the rail height again.
- Raise the knee section, then the backrest, and watch that no hose is pinched.
- Follow the overlay manual on sheets and pads between the person and the air cells.
- Write the turning times from the care team on a sheet by the bed, with a column for skin checks.
When a bed is not the answer
Equipment helps prevent damage; it does not treat a wound. Contact a doctor or nurse if the skin stays red after pressure is taken off, turns dark or purple, blisters or breaks, or if a wound smells, discharges or comes with a fever. The nearest klinik kesihatan or the team that discharged the patient can advise. Our bedsore care at home guide covers the full prevention routine.
Bed sore bed questions
What is a bed sore bed?
It is a hospital bed used together with a pressure-redistributing mattress, such as high-specification foam or an alternating-pressure (ripple) surface. The mattress manages the pressure on the skin; the bed makes turning, sitting up and daily care easier.
What is the best bed for a bedsore patient at home?
There is no single best bed. Look for a frame with a knee section as well as a backrest, and height adjustment if one carer does the turning. Choose the mattress surface by the person’s risk, as assessed by the doctor or nurse.
How much does a bed sore bed cost in Malaysia?
With us, renting the Standard 2 Function bed at RM150 a month and buying a PVC base mattress (RM399) and a ripple overlay (RM199) comes to RM748 for the first month and RM150 a month after that, plus delivery. The deposit is RM0.
Is a pressure ulcer bed the same as an air mattress bed?
The names are not standard. When a listing uses either one, check which mattress surface is included: an air (alternating-pressure) mattress does the pressure work, and the bed itself does not relieve pressure.
Can I rent a bed for a bedsore patient for one month?
Yes. Every hospital bed we rent can be taken for one month, with an RM0 deposit. The ripple overlay and base mattress are bought separately.
Can the ripple mattress go directly on the bed frame?
No. Our RM199 ripple mattress is an overlay. It sits on a base mattress, such as our RM399 PVC waterproof mattress or a suitable one you already have.
