Electric Hospital Beds in Malaysia: Prices, Functions and Running Cost

An electric hospital bed moves its backrest, knee section and height with motors, using a hand control instead of a crank at the foot of the bed. Below: which of our beds are electric, what they cost to rent or buy, what they cost to run, and what happens in a power cut.

An electric hospital bed adjusts with motors and a hand control instead of a hand crank. Yaya Katil Hospital Prihatin (AA Alive Sdn Bhd) offers two new electric models: the 3 Function Auto (M10), which rents at RM450 a month or sells at RM2,799, and the Ultra 6 Function Electric with Hi-Lo (M40), which is sold at RM5,500 and not rented. The rental deposit is RM0 for every duration, including one month, and payment is collected after the bed is delivered and set up.

What the motors move

Each “function” on a hospital bed is one platform movement that can be adjusted on its own. It is not the number of buttons on the hand control. Three movements matter most at home:

Backrest

Raises the upper body for sitting up, eating, breathing more comfortably and talking. It is the movement used most often in a day.

Knee section

Lifts the knees so the person does not slide towards the foot of the bed when the backrest is up. It works together with the backrest.

Height (Hi-Lo)

Raises or lowers the whole bed: low for getting in and out, high so the carer is not bending over during care. On a manual bed it is usually the hardest crank to turn.

When a seller calls a bed “electric”, ask which of these movements are motorised. Some beds motorise the backrest but still need a crank for height; these are often sold as semi-electric. On our 3 Function Auto, all three movements are motorised.

3 Function Auto or Ultra 6 Function?

For most home care, the 3 Function Auto covers the movements that change a carer’s day: backrest, knee and height. Among its six movements, the Ultra 6 Function adds head-end and foot-end tilt; confirm each function against the manual for the exact model. Tilt is useful when a doctor, nurse or therapist has named a specific position in the care plan. If no one has mentioned tilt, it is probably not needed.

A function-by-function comparison of all four beds is in our 2 vs 3 vs 6 function guide (in Malay), and the Ultra has its own product page (in Malay).

Renting an electric bed: total cost by duration

The 3 Function Auto is the only electric model we rent. At RM450 a month with no deposit, bed-only rental adds up like this:

Rental periodBed rental totalCompared with buying at RM2,799
1 monthRM450Under a fifth of the purchase price
2 monthsRM900About a third
3 monthsRM1,350Just under half
6 monthsRM2,700Close to the purchase price

These totals leave out delivery, collection and accessories, and they ignore the value of owning the bed afterwards, so there is no single break-even month for every family. Across 642 completed rentals with explicit hospital-bed evidence between 1 March 2025 and 26 April 2026, the median rental lasted 31 days (rental duration data). If you rent first and decide to buy later, part of the rent paid can be discussed against the purchase, as set out on a written quotation.

How much electricity does an electric hospital bed use?

The motors draw power only while the bed is moving, a few seconds at a time. For the rest of the day the bed is not using energy to move anything, unlike an air conditioner or a fridge that runs for hours.

Work it out for your own bed

Monthly cost = (rated power in watts ÷ 1,000) × hours of movement per month × your tariff in RM per kWh

Hours of movement per month = seconds per adjustment × adjustments per day × 30 ÷ 3,600

As an illustration, about two minutes of movement a day comes to roughly one hour a month. One hour at a rating of a few hundred watts stays under one kilowatt-hour, which is under one ringgit at typical household rates. Use the rating of the actual unit and the rate on your own bill.

Electricity is not a good reason to choose a manual bed. The real difference is the rent or purchase price: RM450 against RM250 a month for the manual Flexi 3 Function.

What happens in a power cut

On a typical electric bed the platform stays where it was and does not drop. But it cannot be adjusted until power returns, so a bed left in a high sitting position stays that way. Behaviour differs between models, so before you need it, confirm in writing for the exact unit you receive:

Do not run an electric bed from one shared socket loaded with other equipment. If the person also uses an oxygen concentrator or a mattress pump, plan the power points together and avoid stacked extension leads.

Who actually needs the motor

Daily situationSuggestionWhy
One carer, and the person needs repositioning many times a dayElectricEvery manual adjustment means walking to the foot of the bed and turning a crank. Many times a day, that adds up.
The person is alert and wants to change position on their ownElectricThe hand control lets them sit up or lie back without calling for help each time.
A few adjustments a day, with a capable carer at homeManual is enoughChoosing the Flexi 3 Function saves RM200 a month on rental or RM1,450 on purchase, with the same three movements.
A short recovery of a few weeksRent firstA one-month rental with no deposit costs less than buying the wrong bed.
No safe socket near where the bed will standManualA cable across the walkway is a daily trip hazard.

Whether the person should adjust the bed alone, especially its height, is a decision for the care team. Some hand controls can lock individual functions.

The longer comparison is in electric vs manual hospital bed. Room and door measurements are on hospital bed dimensions.

Electric hospital bed questions

How much is an electric hospital bed in Malaysia?

Our 3 Function Auto (M10) rents at RM450 a month or sells at RM2,799. The Ultra 6 Function Electric with Hi-Lo (M40) sells at RM5,500 and is not rented. For comparison, the manual 2 and 3 function beds rent at RM150 and RM250 a month.

Is an automatic hospital bed the same as an electric one?

Yes. “Automatic”, “auto” and “electric” all describe a bed whose platform is moved by motors and a hand control rather than a hand crank.

Can I rent an electric hospital bed for one month?

Yes. The 3 Function Auto can be rented for a single month at RM450, and the deposit is RM0 for every rental duration.

Can I rent the Ultra 6 Function?

No. The Ultra 6 Function Electric with Hi-Lo is sold at RM5,500 and is not rented. If a listing shows a monthly rental price for it, ask for written confirmation before comparing.

What happens to an electric hospital bed in a power cut?

A typical electric bed stays in its last position and does not drop, but it cannot be adjusted until power returns. Behaviour differs between models, so ask in writing whether the unit you receive has a backup battery or an emergency lowering method.

Are electric hospital beds noisy?

The motors make a sound while the bed is moving, and only then. If the person sleeps lightly or the bed is in a shared room, ask to hear the actual unit working before you confirm.
